65-year-old deputy Bernard Durkan has been nominated as one of Fine Gael's two candidates in the Kildare North four-seater. Durkan was first elected to the Dáil in 1981 and, aside from a ten-month period in 1982, has served continuously since then. Durkan is currently Chairman of the Dail Committee on European Affairs.
