Labour have turned to journalist John Whelan as they attempt to win their first seat in Laois-Offaly since 1992. Whelan has worked in the newspaper industry for over thirty years, editing regional titles such as the Leinster Express, the Offaly Express and the Leinster Leader. In his online manifesto, Whelan states "I don’t want to be another career politician. But I desperately want to do something about the mess we are in."
