Mary O'Rourke is set to contest her ninth general election as a Fianna Fáil candidate for Longford-Westmeath. A former secondary school teacher, O'Rourke has served continuously as a TD since 1982 with the exception of a five-year gap after she failed to secure enough transfers to retain her seat in 2002 . During her time in Dáil Éireann, she has held a number of ministerial briefs, including stints as Minister for Education, Minister for Health, and Minister for Public Enterprise and Transport.
