FINE GAEL TD for Dún Laoghaire, Seán Barrett, has told RTÉ he expects to be his party’s nominee for the position of Ceann Comhairle in the Dáil later today. The TD, who has been a TD for Dún Laoghaire in all but one Dáil since 1981 and is a former government chief whip, is therefore certain to be elected to the position: assuming he is also supported by Labour, he will command the support of at least 113 voters, well more than the 84 needed. It also means his Dún Laoghaire constituency – which was already a hyper-competitive four-seater this year – will be a three-seater next time.
