OCEANGATE EXPEDITIONS HAS said it believes that all five passengers from the missing submersible Titan “have sadly been lost”.
In a statement this evening, the company that operates the Titan said it “believes that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost”.
This comes after earlier reports that the “landing frame and cover” of the missing submersible Titan were found.
Speaking at a press conference this evening, shortly after the OceanGate statement was released, Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said that “this morning, an ROV, or remote operated vehicle from the vessel Horizon Arctic discovered the tail cone of the Titan submersible approximately 1,600ft from the bow of the Titanic on the sea floor”.
“The ROV subsequently found additional debris. In consultation with experts from within the unified command, the debris is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” Mauger said.
“Upon this determination, we immediately notified the families,” he said.
He said that he offered his “deepest condolences” to the families of the five people on board Titan, adding that he hoped the discovery of debris from the craft offered them “some solace during this difficult time”.

Mauger said he could not say what the prospects were of recovering the bodies of those killed on the Titan expedition.
“This is an incredibly unforgiving environment down there on the sea floor and the debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel,” he said.
“And so we’ll continue to work and continue to search the area down there, but I don’t have an answer for prospects at this time.”
Mauger said there did not appear to be any connection between the underwater noises detected during the search and rescue mission and the location of the debris on the seafloor.
“This was a catastrophic implosion of the vessel which would have generated a significant broadband sound down there that the sonar buoys would have picked up,” he said.

In its statement this evening, OceanGate reportedly said: “These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans.
“Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew.
“This is an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss.”
The company added: “The entire OceanGate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organizations of the international community who expedited wide-ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission.
“We appreciate their commitment to finding these five explorers, and their days and nights of tireless work in support of our crew and their families.
“This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community, and for each of the family members of those lost at sea.
We respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time.”
Undersea expert Paul Hankin said five major pieces of debris helped to identify it as from the Titan submersible.
He told reporters: “We found five different major pieces of debris that told us that it was the remains of the Titan.
“The initial thing we found was the nose cone which was outside of the pressure hull.
“We then found a large debris field. Within that debris field we found the front end bell of the pressure hull.
“That was the first indication that there was a catastrophic event.”
He continued: “Shortly thereafter we found a second smaller debris field. Within that debris field we found the other end of the pressure hull.
“We continue to map out the debris field, and as the admiral said, we will do the best we can to fully map out what’s down there.”

When it came up several months ago, I recall one particular observation on the “botched” execution, … It wasn’t actually botched, it was successful.
Once it has been proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that someone has committed cold blooded murder or rape on any man woman or child they should be put down without mercy the same way there victims were treated. I’m not going to lose sleep over there human rights when they had so little regard for the rights of others.

The problem is that every week there is a story of some lad or lass in the US being released from death row having being found innocent.Hell even China are begining to admit that they have made mistakes.
So becausr he commited a haenous crime, the same should be done to him? Descending to their standards is hardly appropriate. They should rot in jail, not be tortured to death.

Agreed, they should rot in jail while awaiting the end…. who cares if he suffered…. the baby was not given an option on how to go, the girl was not asked if she wanted to be buried dead or alive… he watched, probably enjoyed it…. if you want to spare the death penalty, he should be tortured to moments from death everyday for the rest of his life…. that would be a good deterrent…..
The problem is that ‘reasonable doubt’ is what’s needed to prove someone committed a criminal offence which has led to many mistakes being made in cases. Wasn’t it last week when a chinese court admitted to executing an innocent man and gave his family a couple of grand as compensation. The problem with the death penalty is that you can’t release someone if they’re subsequently found innocent.
The proof was supposed to be “beyond reasonable” doubt, I thought. Which means exactly what it says. Of course sometimes mistakes are made or evidence is suppressed. The Innocence Project has exonerated a fair few people wrongly convicted. Usually through new DNA evidence.

I’m a big fan of the Death penalty but I think they should use the Guillotine.

The Guilitine is the most suitable form of capital punishment for organ harvesting, no chemical contamination or bullet damage. This would of course suit Obamacare and Israel’s lucrative organ harvesting racket.

Yes Glen very surprising indeed. I remember the Chinese executed lots of bankers after their financial meltdown. Us on the other hand didn’t give them a day in jail. Biggest bank bail out ever they said, but they’re still playing Golf Glen.

Ryan, I understand and the much bigger effort should be put in to making sure the innocent never go this road, but there seems to be a major effort in caring for these undoubted monsters. I know its not ideal, but anyone who is clearly guilty of such terrible crimes do not deserve to live, to be a burden on society and to live in hope of being free again. Victims and there families get absolutely nothing but more suffering…..

I’m comparing botched executions of innocents to murders as they are comparable. Fyi. Both are not fair. But take away executions and our murder rate may increase.
The horrific nature of his crimes seem to have shrouded many people’s judgement on the death penalty.
1. Supporting capital punishment means the state will inevitably execute innocent people.
2. The rationale for capital punishment is often a mix of deterrent and punishment. If that is the reasoning, why not also torture the accused before death. Torture is a harsher punishment and certainly a more effective deterrent. If you support the death penalty, then you must support torture. Which types of torture, what duration, which crimes.
3. The role of the justice system is to protect society from criminals. Certainly this is achieved by executing dangerous criminals but it is also achieved by permanent imprisonment where rehabilitation is deemed unsuccessful. It is often pointed out that it will save tax money if we simply execute convicts. A myth I believe as any capital punishment system will have an exhaustive appeals procedure that will cost more than imprisonment.
4. It is often said that if dangerous criminals are not executed they will harm again. A valid point. However the effectiveness of a maximum security prison at minimising harm to innocents must be compared to the effectiveness of a system employing capital punishment. ie. How many guards are killed by inmates or citizens killed by escaped inmates vs how many innocent people the state executes. The data doesn’t exist but I suspect more harm to innocents will be caused in the system with capital punishment.
5. “If the victim was your family member you would feel differently”
Of course I would. I would kill the accused myself given the chance. But the role of the justice system is not to exact vengeance upon the accused.
The crimes are disgusting but be wary of a mob mentality leading to immoral policies.

The fact is it could have been any prisoner on death row, including an innocent man found guilty. One may argue this man deserved it, and there is an argument. but what of say, Bush and Blair, and others like them with blood on their hands? Why are the latter respectable murderers, given the scale of pain, brutality and death they afflicted on others and the effects are still felt today.

In a couple of centuries time people will look back and laugh at how primitive we were having the death penalty. Serves no purpose!
Should look back and say we were too soft. Rapists and paedophiles should be given the death penalty. A touch more fitting that 5 year sentences with 3 years suspended. I can’t get inside the head of anyone who feels bad for these absolute mongrels
The sentences here are far too soft but would anyone trust our judges to impose death penalties? Our legal system has always favoured the elite and wealthy. Remember that guy who bought out his conviction for rape? Also two people that got community service for participating in a manslaughter and let’s not forget the man who got 6 years for killing his wife with a brick. You think the judges who gave those sentences are capable of handing out death sentences? God forbid!

I strongly disagree with the death penalty.
Why not bring back hard labour? Much more punitive in my opinion and more fitting to penalise violent crime. Prison sentences should not be a holiday camp experience for those who committed violent crimes against another person.
Interested to hear of others opinion regarding this….
