HPV cervical screening in the LGBT+ community

Anyone with a cervix is at risk from cervical cancer and should come for regular screening.

CERVICALCHECK INVITES EVERY person with a cervix in Ireland aged 25-65 years for free cervical screening, every three or five years depending on age. 9 in 10 cervical cancers are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is spread through any kind of sexual contact with a man or a woman. You can get it from any kind of physical or sexual contact of the genital area – even if you use a condom.

Sexual contact includes:

  • Any skin-to-skin contact of the genital area
  • Vaginal, oral or anal sex
  • Sharing sex toys
