GARDAÍ IN DUBLIN have intervened to prevent a shooting in Dublin.
One man was arrested on the Jamestown Road in Inchicore following an operation conducted by the Garda Special Crime Task Force west of the city centre at about 3pm.
A number of shots were fired by armed gardaí during the incident, however no injuries resulted.
One man, aged in his 20s, was arrested at the scene after a van was stopped.
A gun and silencer were later recovered from the area.
Video footage has emerged this evening which appears to show the firearm, with the silencer attached, contained in a plastic shopping bag lying at the side of the road.
A second vehicle believed to be involved in the incident fled the scene.
The scene has been preserved pending a Garda technical examination. The suspect, meanwhile, is being held at Ballyfermot Garda Station.
Less than two weeks ago, an associate of the Kinahan drugs cartel was arrested at Dublin Airport on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
Speaking to reporters last month, Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll said gardaí had saved lives in more than 30 circumstances since the Hutch-Kinahan gangland war in Dublin’s inner city erupted last year.
“The restructuring in the organisation has resulted in a situation where we are more often involved in intervening and preventing loss of life than investigating the loss of life,” he said.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to today’s incident, or anyone with information about it, to contact them.
