TEMPERATURES IN EXCESS of 27 degrees have been forecast for 20 counties in Ireland, focused on the west and the midlands.

The high temperatures warning will kick in at noon and remain in place for the 20 counties until 6am on Friday.

The counties affected are Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, and the entire provinces of Munster and Connacht.

Met Éireann said maximum temperatures will be over 27 degrees during the daytime. Overnight, there will be minimum temperatures over 15 degrees, it said.

As a result of the heat, there is the potential impact of water safety issues due to the increased use of lakes, beaches and waterways, as well as the potential of forest fires and drought.

The forecaster also warned of heat stress and uncomfortable sleeping conditions.

It said there is a possibility temperatures may reach up to 30 degrees in some areas this week. It also warned of a high UV index.

“There is the chance of heavy showers or isolated thunderstorms on Wednesday but these will be localised if they do occur,” it added.

The week ahead

According to the forecaster, today will be mostly dry, sunny and very warm.

A few isolated light showers may develop in the southwest, most likely during the late morning with the chance of an odd shower during the afternoon and evening too.

Highest temperatures will be between 23 and 30 degrees, coolest near the east coast as a result of light easterly breezes.

Thursday will also be very warm, with the chance of isolated showers in the southwest. 

It will gradually grow cooler throughout the week, with the lowering of temperatures mainly focused up north.
