Man arrested over murder of missing Sandra Collins
It has been 12 years since Sandra went missing, after buying chips at a local takeaway in Mayo.

Updated 9.05pm

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING THE murder of Sandra Collins in the Killala area of Co Mayo on 4/5 December 2000 have arrested a male in his 40’s this evening in the Ballina area.

He is currently detained at Ballina Garda Station and is scheduled to appear before a special sitting of Ballina District Court at 11am tomorrow morning, charged in connection with the murder.

The 4 December 2012 marked 12 years since the day Sandra went missing at the age of 28. She was last seen buying a large bag of chips in a local takeaway at around 11.30pm on Tuesday 4 December 2000.

Her family made a fresh appeal for information about the location of her body on the recent anniversary. Speaking to TheJournal.ie, her brother Patrick Collins said at the time:

It’s another year and we still don’t have her. We are asking people if they could find it in their hearts to give the Gardaí any information they might have so we can bury her with my mother and brother.
There are so many unanswered questions. Somebody, somewhere holds the key. We haven’t forgotten Sandra, she has a family here that is waiting for her.

Four days after she went missing, her fleece jacket was found on the pier in Killala. Her family said they had accepted she was not coming home alive, but believed she had not taken her own life.

Three people have previously been arrested in connection with her disappearance but none were charged.
