Stabbing

Man charged over Loyalist stabbing in Belfast supermarket

Senior UVF figure Harry Stockman is seriously ill after being stabbed yesterday at a Tesco store.

A MAN CHARGED WITH attempted murder following a stabbing in a Belfast branch of Tesco yesterday has been refused bail.

Harry Stockman, 50, underwent emergency surgery following the attack and remains critically ill.

Stockman is a senior figure in the UVF, according to the Irish News (print edition), and police investigating the stabbing are exploring several possible motives for it including revenge for the UVF killing of Bobby Moffett last year.

UTV reports that David Madine, 40, of Innishargie Gardens, Bangor, Co Down, was arrested shortly after the attack and appeared in court in Belfast this morning. Police voiced their concerns for his safety if released from custody, the BBC reports.

Bail was refused, but the judge said that if a suitable address could be supplied for Madine, the situation could be reviewed. Madine is due to appear in court again on 19 May.
