THE BODIES OF 71 people, buried in a mass grave, have been found by Mexico’s navy on the Mexico-US border.
It is suspected that the victims may be “undocumented immigrants of different nationalities”, according to Alejandro Poire, a government spokesperson.
The navy was reportedly tipped off about the incident by a wounded man. When they approached the site, they say they were fired at by gunmen.
It is believed that the victims were civilians from countries like Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador and Honduras who were attempting to cross the US border.
The navy believe that the people, 14 women and 58 men, were killed by the Zetas drug gang.
There has been a sharp increase in violent killings in Mexico over the last number of years, which is blamed squarely on organized crime.
Hundreds of bodies disposed of in mass graves across the country have been discovered in the past two months alone.
More than 28,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico in the last four years.
