Prisoner admits trying to kill Soham child killer Ian Huntley
Appearing in court today, Damien Fowkes also pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Colin Hatch, who murdered a seven-year-old boy in 1993.
A CONVICTED MURDERER has admitted killing one child killer while in prison in England and seriously injuring another.
Damien Fowkes appeared at Hull Crown Court today charged with the attempted murder of Soham killer Ian Huntley, who murdered 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, and the murder of convicted paedophile Colin Hatch.
Hatch had a number of convictions for assaulting young boys and was serving a life sentence at the maximum-security Full Sutton jail for the murder of a seven-year-old boy when he was killed in February. Hatch had killed young Sean Williams while on parole for child sexual assault offences in 1993.
Fowkes pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Huntley, whose neck was slashed at HMP Frankland prison last year, and the manslaughter of Hatch. The court was told today that he exhibits “strong psychopathic traits”, the Independent reports.
Fowkes was serving a minimum 12-year sentence for a series of robberies committed in September 2002.
Today the Prison Officers’ Association said that no prisoner or prison officer is completely safe in jail, the BBC reports. The organisation said that paedophiles are at particular risk of attack while in prison.
An official inquiry into Hatch’s death in prison has been suspended pending the completion of Fowkes’ case.
