Search resumes for fisherman missing off west coast

Earlier search teams from the west coast found the currach in which the missing fisherman was last seen yesterday evening.

THE SEARCH FOR a fisherman who went missing off the west coast of the country yesterday has resumed.

Search teams have already recovered the currach which the 43-year-old man was last seen rowing in at around 5pm yesterday evening in the Mace Head region of Co Galway.

Though there has been no sign of the fisherman as yet the search continues this morning with Valentia Coast Guard co-ordinating the operation along with the Shannon Rescue helicopter and a number of other coast guards.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, John Draper of Valentia Coast Guard, said that the search began at around 10.35pm last night before concluding at 4am this morning.

Search teams have been out again from before 7am this morning. The currach was discovered north of Inishmore and the search will not work up along Mace Head today.

Conditions are “not unduly bad” at present, Draper told the programme.
