McGahon has been a Senator since March 2020, and is the party spokesperson on climate action. McGahon was elected to Louth County Council in 2014, and was re-elected in 2019. He was acquitted in a criminal trial in 2022 of assault causing harm, but a jury apportioned 65% blame to McGahon in a civil court earlier this year and he was ordered to pay damages to another man.
