Damning report that led to Shatter's resignation to be published today

The Guerin Report was commissioned to investigate the reporting of confidential information by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.

THE REPORT THAT led to the former Minister for Justice, Equality, and Defence Alan Shatter’s resignation will be published later today.

The Guerin Report was commissioned to investigate the reporting of confidential information by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe and is said to contain “extremely serious allegations” against some members of An Garda Síochána.

Senior barrister Seán Guerin recommends that the allegations should be the subject of a statutory inquiry.

Shatter received a copy of this report on the morning of his resignation.

However, he only read three chapters of the report in full, as well as the accompanying letters from Guerin.

He said it made him feel that it was “his duty” to resign as Justice Minister.

Frances Fitzgerald was appointed the new Minister for Justice and Equality yesterday, with Taoiseach Enda Kenny taking over the Defence portfolio.
