1. # MURDER: Gardaí have launched a murder investigation after the body of a 26-year-old woman was found in a bag on Blackhorse Avenue in Dublin yesterday morning. The woman was a student from Malawi who had been living in Rathmines in Dublin for the past two years.
2. #EU SUMMIT: Enda Kenny will attend an informal meeting of EU leaders in Brussels today to finalise the wording of the new European treaty. Ireland’s Attorney General will advise the government on whether a referendum is required to adopt the treaty once the text is finalised.
3. #BAILOUT: The treaty being discussed in Brussels today is aimed at fixing the financial crisis, with some discussion in recent weeks over whether Ireland will need a second bailout. Ten economists were asked for their views on whether Ireland should be preparing for a second bailout – and here’s what they had to say.
4. #MISSING: The search has resumed off the Louth coast for a fisherman believed to have fallen from a fishing trawler into the Irish Sea yesterday. Helicopters and a naval vessel resumed the search at around 8.15am today for the fisherman, who has not yet been named.
5. #BONUS: The head of a British bank has said he will turn down a bonus of almost £1 million (€1.14 million) after public outcry and political pressure. Stephen Hester, the chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland, took over the bank when it nearly collapsed in 2008 and had to be part nationalised, and has been trying to turn around the fortunes of the bank.
6. #ROBIN HOOD TAX: French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said he plans to introduce a tax on financial transactions later this year regardless of whether it is introduced across Europe. The so-called ‘Robin Hood’ tax will be introduced in August, Sarkozy said last night.
7. #ROADS: A 19-year-old man was killed and three people were injured in a car crash in Donegal in the early hours of this morning. The man, who was the driver of the car, died when the vehicle struck a bridge in Mountcharles at around 2am.
8. # SYRIA: Syrian troops seized rebel strongholds in suburbs near the capital Damascus yesterday after a bloody weekend which saw at least 62 people killed. The fighting in recent days has been among the worst seen in the country over the past 10 months.
9. #UNEMPLOYMENT: The government is failing its own targets on poverty and unemployment, according to a new study. Ireland is moving in the wrong direction with more people falling into poverty, a flatlining jobs market and a lack of action in key areas, according to the study by Social Justice Ireland.
