IF YOU’RE LOOKING to start afresh and move home this year, The Shanty in Brittas, Co Dublin might just be the perfect place to do so.
On the market for €695,000 through Brock DeLappe, the four-bed home has Dermot Bannon’s seal of approval after being extensively renovated to his design on Room to Improve.
The property was built in the early 20th century as a hunting lodge for a London hotelier, and was later majorly revamped by its current owner (former Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone) in 2013.
In true Bannon style, the renovation saw the lodge being joined with the mews behind it to create a spacious, light-filled kitchen, living and dining area. Both buildings were re-insulated, re-wired and re-plumbed, making for a modern and comfortable home.
Stepping inside, the entrance opens straight into the original sunroom. There’s a great focus on bringing the outside in at The Shanty, with picture windows at various heights and glass doors throughout the 2,400 sq ft home overlooking the leafy landscaped gardens.
The sunroom leads through to the kitchen, living and dining area. Vaulted ceilings and glass doors create a great sense of space in here, while wood floors, wooden beams and a wood-burning stove add a homely feel. This is the ideal multi-functional space, with room to cook, dine, entertain and unwind. Sliding glass doors lead to one of two courtyards, allowing for an easy transition to dining al fresco when temperatures rise.
A mezzanine level, which is accessed through one of the bedrooms, looks over the living area and would make for an ideal home office or study.
Off the kitchen is a separate reception room, which features another wood-burning stove and sliding glass doors to the second courtyard. This space, along with the corridor which leads to the bedrooms, is part of the new structure which joins the lodge and the mews.
Moving down the corridor, the master bedroom is plenty spacious and features built-in wardrobes, a wood-burning stove, access to the courtyard and a sizeable en suite bathroom. There are three other bedrooms in the house, with one featuring courtyard views, and two more bathrooms.
The Shanty enjoys a great sense of privacy, with electric wooden gates opening to a tree-lined driveway. Mature shrubs surround the property, while there’s a neat lawn on either side of the driveway.
This sense of tranquility continues beyond the front gate, which is a short stroll from a Coillte forest with multiple trails. Saggart village is a 10-minute drive away, while the M50 can be reached in less than 20 minutes.
With a stellar design, picturesque surroundings and easy access to the city centre, The Shanty is the ideal urban retreat.
