TWITTER’S PLANS TO move into eCommerce took another step forward after details of its new feature, Twitter Commerce, were leaked.
The company will allow users to purchase products inside the Twitter app and website, and is expected to partner with at least one US eCommerce site Fancy.com, according to Re/Code.
The company is also close to striking a deal with Stripe so it will process transactions, while sites like Fancy.com will advertise the products on the site.
Leaked screenshots show the feature appearing inside Twitter users streams, similar to how Promoted Tweets are displayed. Expanding the tweet will provide you with a description of the item and the option to purchase it.
Some Commerce tweets will appear on the Discover tab allowing you to see the type of items bought by people you follow. No date has been provided as to when it will launch, nor the number of companies that will sign up to the service when it launches.
Facebook also played around with the idea of eCommerce through Gifts, a feature it launched near the end of 2012, but the lack of demand meant it retired it late last year.
Twitter’s first quarterly earnings report since it went public in November is taking place on Wednesday. Before its IPO, the site had 232 million users and made $422.2 million during the first nine months of 2013. However, it made a loss of $133.9 million during the same period.
