Bomb disposal team make chemical safe in secondary school

The army bomb disposal team were called in to deal with an unstable chemical at Christ the King Secondary School in Douglas, Cork today.

AN ARMY BOMB Disposal Team visited a Cork girls’ secondary school today to make an unstable chemical safe.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team to Christ the King Secondary School, Douglas following a request from the gardaí.

Theteam were called to made safe a quantity of the unstable chemical Dinitrophenylhydrazine and arrived on scene at 4pm. The chemical was found in a school laboratory during a routine audit, and was removed to a safe location where it was made safe through the use of a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 4.35 pm and the team returned to base. Dinitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical re-agent routinely used in laboratories around the country that can become unstable over time.

Other types of callouts for EOD Teams would include improvised explosive devices, conventional munition destruction such as old artillery shells discovered by members of the public, and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
