FORMER LIBERIAN PRESIDENT Charles Taylor has been convicted by a Hague court of war crimes and crimes against the humanity including the recruitment and deployment of child soldiers.

He is the first former head of state to be convicted by an international tribunal since the Nuremburg trials after World War II.

Taylor had denied all 11 charges brought against him, which ranged from rape and torture, to the recruitment of child soldiers and murder during the 11-year civil war in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone’s rebel Revolutionary United Front became well-known for their ‘calling card’ of cutting off hands and feet.

Prosecutors also accused Taylor of funnelling weapons and ammunition through Liberia to rebels in Sierra Leone in exchange for ‘blood diamonds’ which were mined by slave labourers.

The former leader was indicted in 2003 and tried by the Special Court for Sierra Leone. He told the court that he believed the charges brought against him were part of a US and British plot to force him from power.

The court fount him guilty of aiding and abetting the following crimes:

  • acts of terrorism
  • murder
  • violence to life and mental or physical wellbeing
  • rape
  • sexual slavery
  • outrages upon personal dignity
  • conscripting or enlisting children under the age of 15 years to armed groups and using them to act in hostilities
  • enslavement
  • pillage

Delivering the verdict today, presiding judge Richard Lussick said the chamber had “found beyond reasonable doubt” that the accused is “criminally responsible for aiding and abetting” the RUF in carrying out crimes in Sierra Leone. It also found him guilty of planning attacks carried out by the rebel fighters.

Taylor is expected to appeal the verdict.

Sentencing is scheduled for the morning of 30 May and Taylor has been remanded in custody.

  • This has been going on for decades in Africa and it’s about time that someone has been convicted of crimes like these!

When it comes to the gathering of wealth, this case typifies ‘mans inhumanity to man’. I hope he rots in hell as he is evil personified.

The unfortunate thing is that people are still being used as slaves all over Africa, harvesting these diamonds and as long as their is a market for them in the West, this practice will continue!

  • The buyers of these blood diamonds should also be charged as accessories.

  • Good, lock him up and forget about him.

  • Finally improving. Are you for real. It’s the most corrupt continent in the world. Take Zimbabwe. They tried to murder and remove any white man left standing. Took over a very profitable farming sector and within 6 months ran it into the ground. In time it will turn to civil war like the vast majority of African nations.

  • There is no limit to how barbaric Africans can be. I see the Nigerian christians are burning ‘witches’. In East Africa, albinos are being ‘hunted’ like animals, for their body parts. “I want your legs”, said one man as he begun hacking at an albinos legs with a machete. As shocking as it gets.

Google ‘General Butt Naked’ (Liberia) to see one crazy, knife-wielding, cannibalistic animal. He’s not human.
BTW, Shane Smith did a documentary on Liberia, I think it’s on Youtube.

    • I’m sure that you are aware, Kevin, that it is the interference by Western and Asian governments and MNCs that is driving much of the demand for the illegal diamonds that fuel such barbarity? Or is it just easier to blame this murderer’s ethnicity? Like a very moral man said in Dublin last week (ahem!), what’s your agenda?

    • Current TV did a documentary on General Butt Naked and he freely admitted, actually it’s too horrific to write here. He’s all right now because he has found Jesus and has become a Minister of the Faith and is spreading the good word. One of the best programs I’ve seen in a long time because it just left me shaking my head in disbelief at humanity or the lack of it. What he admitted straight to camera would have had him lynched in any civilized country.

  • Another tyrant from the failed continent. When will the world wake up and realise that Africa simple can’t run itself?

    • Yeah because the West should do the brave and decent thing and re-colonialise the place after it is finally improving after centuries of exploitation and misrule by European Powers- great idea!

  • It’s not just “illegal” diamonds that are funding gross human rights violations. The vested interests (dominant Western powers) in the diamond industry have dictated that only “rough diamonds used by rebel movements…” can be classed as “conflict diamonds” This keeps the public spotlight focused on the relatively low-value mining end of the supply pipe and allows the high value, cut and polished sector to evade any human rights regulations. Diamonds that fund human rights violations by government forces also evade regulation. Israel is the world’s leading diamond exporter in value terms. Diamonds account for 30% of Israel’s exports. The diamond industry in Israel generates over $1 billion/yr in funding for the Israeli military that stands accused of “serious war crimes and possible crimes against humanity by the UN Human Rights Council. These blood diamonds are sold worldwide labelled conflict free. Forty pervent of diamond sales in the US are crafted in Israel bringing more money into the Israeli economy than the US gives in military aid each year. http://electronicintifada.net/content/diamond-industrys-double-standard-israel/10102
