Ex-Ukraine PM moved to hospital after two week hunger strike

YULIA TYMOSHENKO, UKRAINE’S imprisoned former prime minister, has been moved from jail to a hospital for treatment of a severe back condition under the supervision of a German doctor.

The move was likely to allay at least some Western concerns over Tymoshenko’s health and handling in prison.

Top EU officials and some EU governments have vowed to boycott the European football championship matches co-hosted by Ukraine in June, and Ukraine had to cancel a regional cooperation summit this weekend after most heads of central and eastern European states cancelled their visits over the Tymoshenko case.

Tymoshenko, 51, the country’s top opposition leader, has been on hunger strike for more than two weeks to protest alleged abuse, and Ukraine’s government has come under intense Western pressure to provide Tymoshenko with suitable medical care.

Deputy Health Minister Raisa Moiseyenko said Tymoshenko was moved from her prison in Kharkiv to a local clinic this morning. Dr. Lutz Harms, a neurologist with Berlin’s Charite clinic, will supervise her treatment at the hospital because Tymoshenko does not trust government-controlled doctors.

Moiseyenko said she hopes the hospitalisation and treatment will prompt Tymoshenko to end her hunger strike.

Tymoshenko has been sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of abuse of office while conducting natural gas import negotiations with Russia in 2009. The West has condemned the verdict as politically motivated and has piled pressure on Ukraine to free her and end the alleged mistreatment.

    • I think some ppl in da west needs to get reality check when it comes to this so called political prisoner. Back in the day madam Tymoshenko was the head of “edinie energeticheskie sistemy” the middle man between russian gazprom and ukranian naftogaz, if u have vivid imagination u can imagine the amount of “dough” madam had made then ( we are talking MILLIONS of dollars), later when she climbed the political stage and bacame “prime minister” she continuned her “work experience”. She is not a political prisoner. She got exactly what she deserved – playing with fire she got burned. I do not believe a word that comes out of this whoman mouth, its interesting how this mascarade gonna end…

    • I agree pavel. Everyone in ireland is crying out for justice and want our own politicians and bankers brought before the law and prosecuted. Ukraine had the balls to do this when one of its politicians were corrupt and they are getting nothing but grief.

    • @SB You say you do not believe her charges are you some type of expert on Ukrainian politics, I think not, having spent over 2 years in Ukraine I can tell you that this woman is not as clean as it may seem, mind you when you see comments like yours you can understand why so many corrupt people are able to walk the streets without worrying about being convicted for their crimes against the state and its citizens, a little knowledge is a most dangerous thing in your case

Get a life. I am merely looking at the face of the woman and no matter who she is, she looks unwell. I am thinking in a humaniterian way for her. No, I have no idea who she is or what she’s accused of nor do I know the Ukranian government! Instead of being rude to me, spend the time telling me about her and the Government and/or what she’s accused of. Try and be positive once in a while!

    • Sheila. Don’t back track now! You stated that you don’t believe the charges against her… Stick with them if it’s an educated comment! You based that comment on your sympathy for how she looks and her current (self-inflicted) state, by your own admission. Perhaps the above comment might have been a tad aggressive toward you but it is only out of frustration as so many people make comments such as yours without educating themselves on the matter. Don’t back track though if that is your belief!
