IT’S A DAY FOR NEW RESOLUTIONS and there’s no better time to start planning ahead for the coming year.

If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, you might be looking for something a bit more off the beaten track unusual than previous holidays.

Siberia, Russia
If you really want off-the-beaten-track, then anywhere past Ekaterinburg on the TransSiberian rail line could be what you're looking for. This picture is from Listvyanka, a small rural town on the shores of Lake Baikal. (Image: S Ryan)
Pripyat, Ukraine
Nature has been working hard to reclaim the town of Pripyat, abandoned following the 1986 nuclear disaster at the nearby Chernobyl power station. Moeraki, New Zealand
A beach on the east coast of New Zealand's south island is home to strange geological formations. Huge spherical stones line the shore, having fallen out of the cliffs as coastal erosion eats into the rock. Some of the rounded rocks have cracked open, revealing honeycomb-like formations inside.
