PROTESTERS IN THE Occupy Wall Street movement in New York won a postponement on their removal today – but clashed with police during celebrations of the victory.
A confrontation between activists and authorities at Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan was expected earlier today after the company that owns the park said it would power-wash the area, meaning protesters would be forced to move.
The cleaning was postponed – but as people streamed into the streets in apparent celebration, disputes erupted with police. Reuters reports that 14 people were arrested, and a number of photos show protesters apparently injured.
The Guardian reports that Occupy Wall Street said said in a statement: “This development has emboldened the movement and sent a clear message that the power of the people has prevailed against Wall Street.”
Hundreds of people have been camped at Zuccotti Park for several weeks, in a protest against political and financial elites that has spread to cities around the world including Dublin.
