Garda helicopter and stinger device used in high-speed car chase

Two juveniles and three teenagers were arrested near Lucan, county Dublin in the early hours of this morning.

GARDAÍ IN WEST Dublin arrested five people in the early hours of this morning following a high-speed car chase.

The operation targeting criminal activity in the Dublin region began at about 1.40am when a silver Ford Mondeo was spotted close to Newcastle. When gardaí attempted to stop the car, it was driven off at high speed in the Lucan direction.

Assistance from the Garda Air Support Unit was requested as the vehicle drove westbound on the M4. The helicopter was able to relay the suspects’ location to units on the ground. Eventually, a stinger device was deployed and the Mondeo was stopped on the motorway, close to Kilcock. The device is used to puncture the tyres of the car, slowing it down.

The two juveniles and three teenage males were detained and taken to Leixlip garda station. Three of the youths were charged today but released on bail until their next court appearance on 21 May. The two juveniles will be cautioned under the Juvenile Deferral System.
