Government to apply for EU grant for TalkTalk staff

The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund would help former Waterford Talk Talk staff to retrain and find new work.

THE GOVERNMENT IS to apply for a grant from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund in order to assist workers from Waterford’s closed down Talk Talk call centre to retrain and find new work.

At the beginning of September, management informed 575 workers at the centre that operations would cease – giving stunned staff just 30 days’ notice.

Minister for Training and Skills Ciarán Cannon said: “I am now satisfied that an application to the EU can be made for EGF support for these workers and this department will now proceed to prepare such an application”.

Ireland has previously made three successful applications to the EGF scheme following large scale redundancies – including for another group of Waterford workers who lost their jobs. Former staff from Waterford Crystal, DELL and SR Technics all benefited from the scheme.
