Number of people sleeping rough in Dublin increases

Around 100 people are homeless this winter, the majority are Irish men.

AROUND 100 PEOPLE are sleeping rough on the streets of Dublin this winter, an increase of around 14 people since last year.

In November, the Dublin Region Homeless Consultative Forum counted 87 people sleeping rough, but on average 14 people are usually missed and are added to the final tally.

Out of the people counted, 68 were men, 10 were women and it was not identified which sex nine of the homeless people were.

Of the 87 people sleeping rough, 44 were Irish nationals, nine were non-Irish nationals and the nationality  for 34 people was not identified.

Although the number of homeless has risen, the number of non-Irish people has decreased and it has been put down to the various inter-sectoral programmes for homeless migrants.

Pat Doyle, CEO Peter McVerry Trust said the numbers of rough sleepers was not surprising:

The figures are no surprise to us. Every night we see the numbers of people seeking emergency accommodation at Camden Hall.

Peter McVerry Trust is actively working to do its part to ensure that the number of rough sleepers decreases. We have added an additional five cold weather beds in two of our services in Conyngham Road and Aungier Street, Dublin.
