Jill Meagher accused to face trial on 30 September

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, appeared via video link from Melbourne Assessment Prison for the hearing this morning.

THE MAN ACCUSED of the rape and murder of Irish woman Jill Meagher will stand trial on 30 September – 8 days after the first anniversary of her death.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, has pleaded guilty to her rape, but has denied her murder, as well as the rape of two other women.

Melbourne’s Herald Sun is reporting that up to 25 witnesses could be called to give evidence during her trial, which is expected to be completed before 30 October, which would have been the Co Louth woman’s 31st birthday.

Bayley appeared via video link from Melbourne Assessment Prison for the hearing this morning.

The family of Jill Meagher were not in court for today’s proceedings.
