A YOUNG MAN’s body has been recovered from a lake in Killarney after he drowned while swimming with a friend earlier this evening.

The man in his 20s had been swimming with a friend to a nearby island in Lough Leane this evening when he got into difficulty.

When his friend reached the shore and realised the man was not with him he alerted authorities.

The body was recovered at around 7.30pm by members of the Killarney Water Rescue with teams from the Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue and Ballybunion Irish Coast Guard unit also tasked to the scene.

The incident is the latest in a series of tragic drownings since the good weather began earlier this month and over 20 people have now died by drowning in Irish waters this year.
