7 essential Kylie moments you may have forgotten that made her a style icon

The style that earned her a place in pop history.

FROM HER YOUNG, permed beginnings as tomboy mechanic Charlene Robinson in Neighbours to her surprise appearance as The Green Fairy in Moulin Rouge!, Kylie’s style has always claimed our attention.

Here we round up our favourite moments in the style evolution of arguably Australia’s greatest ever export, Kylie Minogue.

1. The huge 80′s wedding dress (1988)

Shortly after her high school exams, Kylie Minogue auditioned as part of an influx of new characters to boost Neighbours’ ratings. Inevitably, a week’s contract turned into a two-year stint as dungaree-wearing Charlene.

Before Kylie left the show to pursue her music career (she released two singles and a debut album while filming), her character married her beau Scott Robinson (Jason Donovan) in an episode that was viewed by 20 million people when broadcast in the UK.

At the wedding, she wore a high-neck white lace wedding dress and a considerable amount of wine lipliner, in a fantastically 80s wedding we will always enjoy rewatching.

2. Gracing Dublin in this oversized leather jacket (1990)

While touring with her second studio album Enjoy Yourself, Kylie came to perform at RDS Simmonscourt and consequently did some promotion in Dublin ahead of the gig in an oversized leather jacket.

Even surrounded by images of herself in a strange gold hat and with her hair pulled back and simple makeup, Kylie still had star power like no other.

3. Those gold hot pants (2000)

Arguably her most famous look of them all, Kylie showed off a particularly memorable pair of tiny gold hot pants for her music video for Spinning Around, a song that was originally written for Paula Abdul.

The song debuted at number one in both the UK and Australia and climbed within the top five in Ireland, and the infamous gold hot pants have since toured several museums detailing the pop icon’s style.

4. That green dress in Moulin Rouge! (2000)

Just days after Spinning Around released and began to race up the charts, Kylie also made her ninth (but most memorable) film appearance as The Green Fairy who appears to serenade Ewan McGregor and co when they drink absinthe in Moulin Rouge!.

Interestingly, the character was originally going to be a ‘long haired muscle man’, voiced by Ozzy Osbourne, who still voices the laugh heard when The Green Fairy turns evil in the film.

5. That white jumpsuit (2001)

A song that reached number one in every country in Europe apart from Finland, along with forty countries across the globe, Can’t Get You Outta My Head was one of Kylie’s most iconic songs.

The video, which was set amongst a number of futuristic backgrounds, was made famous by Kylie’s unforgettable white, hooded jumpsuit, which was later displayed in Kylie: The Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert in London.

In a year that saw Dido and S Club 7 scoop the best album and single categories respectively, Kylie not only won Best International Album for her album Fever, but performed Can’t Get You Outta My Head live on stage.

In a look that became synonymous with the singer, she paired silver thigh high boots with a short white dress and slicked back hair, surrounded by extraterrestrial backing dancers.

7. That velvet red dress (2015)

With wax versions of herself scattered in Madame Tussauds throughout the globe from Amsterdam to London, Kylie has reached a level of fame that has culminated in four versions of herself in the London location alone.

Because of this, Kylie is not just the only person to have more than one in the London museum, but the only person who has more wax versions of herself is The Queen, which is no surprise for the eternally stylish Princess of Pop.

When they unveiled the newest addition in 2015, Kylie met her double in a simple, red velvet dress that immediately reminded us of her position as a style icon.
