A UK MAN has died following a horrific shark attack partly witnessed by his new wife whilst the couple were on honeymoon in the Seychelles.
Ian Redmond, 30, was attacked in shallow water off the Anse Lazio beach, on the island of Praslin in the Indian Ocean where he had been snorkeling as his wife sunbathed on the beach nearby, Sky News reports.
He survived the initial attack but could not be saved when he was brought to shore, BBC News reports. The attack happened at around 5pm local time (2pm GMT) yesterday. Redmond lost an arm and suffered hip injuries in the attack.
The Sun reports that his bride Gemma Houghton, 27, had been sunbathing on the nearby beach when she heard her husband shout “Help, help” as he was attacked.
Redmond was rescued by fishermen who pulled him onto their dinghy but he could not be saved when he was brought to shore. One witness told of the gruesome nature of the man’s injuries:
The swimmer was missing a huge chunk of flesh from his left leg, so much so that I could see the bone of his thigh. He was sickeningly pale, but still had his flippers on both feet.A woman ran over and started screaming. She said, ‘That’s my husband! We were just married’.
Sky News adds that local police said there was no chance of Redmond surviving the attack such was the extent of his injuries which included holes in his chest and stomach.
The couple had just been married on the 6 August and were honeymooning on an island just 20 miles from where Prince William and wife Kate had recently had their own honeymoon.
The location is regularly voted as one of the best beaches in the world but this is the second fatal shark attack in the area in recent weeks after a 36-year-old French tourist was killed there on 2 August.
Authorities have launched a hunt for the shark which they believe is either a Bull shark or a Tiger shark, the Daily Mail adds.
