IT’S HARD TO get away from it: St Patrick’s Day is tomorrow. It’s seen as a great promotional tool for Ireland, as well as a day for the nation to forget its worries and have a good time. On the other hand, some say that we have TOO good a time.
We’re wondering how that makes you feel. Are you looking forward to it?

Just means a day off to be with the family…take them to see the Parade…compare the arying sizes of shamrock clumps perched on various lapels ranging in size from a two euro coin to a coal shovel sized scoop (earth on the end of it and all)! We have much to be depressed about these days so take any opportunity you can to de couple from the grind and that includes Patricks Day. Spend it as you will…to each their own.
It’s a bit of good craic. Tacky parades and a couple of pints with the lads! And this year we have the rugby AND a bank holiday on Monday. What’s not to like?

I used to hate Paddy’s Day when I lived in Ireland, but since I’ve been living in a country where it’s a complete non-event, I’ve missed it. So now I’m on my way to the airport to fly to Dublin for the weekend, second year in a row. There’s nothing like living outside Ireland to make you appreciate your Irish identity.
Jaysus, people are taking things waaay too seriously and are so negative about this whole weekend that it pains me greatly.
If you don’t want to be in town for the parade and the madness then stay at home and watch the parade on TV with a big Irish brekkie followed by Darby O’Gill and the Little People. Then go to your local and have a few pints watching the rugby.
If you do want to go to the parade, don’t go to the middle of O’Connell Street. Go to either end of the route – less chance of getting crushed. Drinking wise – go a little bit out of O’Connell Street and College Green to avoid the drunken idiots vomiting around 9pm that night.
I love the atmosphere of the day whether I am staying at home or heading out.
Things are tough for so many at the moment, so let’s just have a day to celebrate being Irish and knowing how to have the craic regardless of the our country’s circumstances and let’s have some escapism from the doom and gloom that is constantly being showered upon on us by the media.

we all need to have fun days. don’t spoil it with excessive drinking though. was raging over the awful t-shirst, caps and stuff in america with slogans that irish people are puking, drunken, idiots. the company ‘urban …(something) deserve to be taken to some racial equality disciplinary tribunal!

No harm in it, a day of craic but I normally tend to stay clear of the pubs until late when the porter patriots are gone home :P
It can be a great day but why allow ourselves be depicted (and depict ourselves) as drunken idiots around the world by purchasing merchandise bearing slogans such as ‘Irish I Were Drunk’ and the latest…… Yogo Irish Style showing bodies in various positions clearly semi conscious through drink. These are just two examples but there are countless others. This is how much of the world sees us – mud does stick – there are so many good things to come out of Ireland – why focus on this particularly at a time when we need all the help we can get in terms of image and reputation. Believe me – I lived most of my life in London and know the stereotype irish is very much how we are seen.
I think everyone does be in good spirits on st Patrick’s day. And If nothing more than it being a celebration…everyone shows off our beautiful country and culture. For one day the world looks at us in a good way. Bankers, governments etc are all forgotten about!!!
God some people are so up tight about it..its a day to have fun and meet up with friends and family and have a few drinks..or get a bit tipsy :P..now whats wrong with that??..and also hate when people think that being somewhat patriotic is Extreme nationalism..nothing wrong with being proud of your nation, now matter what state its in!!

Yay, let’s celebrate the bringing of Catholicism to this country. I wonder do even a small percentage of these misguided patriots realise what Paddy’s is all about? Ah sure, it doesn’t matter… let’s all just get bladdered. The big picture isn’t important, right? Go ahead and red thumb me, it won’t surprise me in the least.

I don’t consider myself a Christian but I do love Christmas. Don’t believe in Santa Claus either. It doesn’t effect my enjoyment of the holiday. For better or worse, Paddy’s Day is so far removed from it’s religious roots that I think those roots are irrelevant.
At the time of St. Patrick Cumbria was part of Yr Hen Ogledd or The Old North, including the ancient kingdom of Rheged. The entire area, from Glasgow to Cornwall and from Bangor, Wales across as far as Birmingham was Welsh speaking at the time. The name Cumbria is derived from an ancient Brythonic root *cambr- meaning compatriot or fellow inhabitant, denoting people of the same tribe. In Cumbric, a Brythonic language which died out in the 1300s, the -mb- combination was retained which gave is *Cymbry, a word which later became Cumbria. Medieval and Modern Welsh merged the -mb- combination to give -m- which is visible in the modern Welsh name for Wales, Cymru. It’s not known for certain if St. Patrick was Welsh or Cumbrian, but what is certain is that he was from a Brythonic speaking tribe.
As an aside, the words Britain and Brythonic are derived from the Old Welsh name for the island “Prydain” which is still used in Welsh today to describe Britain and is a word associated with the Irish word “Cruithne” – the Irish for the Picts.
You are not in a position to make any claims about what people know or don’t know, thats so condescending its like something the Catholic church would say. (I know you said you wondered, but I inferred arrogance in your sentiment)
Some people choose to have faith in Catholicism (personally I do not). You have no idea about their opinions on the church itself. What gives you the authority to claim they are misguided?
