YEATS’ COUNTRY, AROUND the Sligo/Leitrim border, is a beautiful area.
Right in the heart of all that scenery is Schriff Cottage, which is for sale. So, technically, you could follow in Yeats’ footsteps and head to Inis Free (although this is an upgrade on the cabin made of clay and wattles which Yeats dreamt of).
In fact, this 19th century hunting lodge, which is for sale through Ganly Walters for €725,000 via Daft.ie, actually overlooks the famous Lake Isle of Inis Free as well as the nearby Lough Gill.
This two-storey, five-bedroom house, where British Prime Minister Robert Peel is said to have once hunted, has a two-acre walled garden, filled with flowering shrubs and vegetables for summer, as well as its own waterfall on the lands.
The surrounding lands are divided into approximately 20 acres of grazing land and 50 acres of woodland.
Inside, on the ground floor, there is a spacious entry hall, dining room, ante-room, kitchen, breakfast room, sitting room and one of the five bedrooms.
A winding stairs leads to the first floor (there’s an additional ‘servants’ staircase’ at the back of the house) where there are four additional bedrooms plus two family bathrooms.
In the back of the property there is a cut-stone courtyard which contains coach houses, stables, a vinery and further storage areas.
The house has been recently renovated by the current owners to modernise it but also to keep as much of its historical charm as possible.
Shriff Cottage is available through Ganly Waters for €725,000 via Daft.ie.
