RTE seeking further job cuts

State broadcaster is reviewing applications not decided on by management.

RTE HAS REOPENED its voluntary redundancy and early retirement scheme, as the state broadcaster seeks further job cuts.

In a statement to staff, RTE said it was reviewing applications which had already been received but which had not been decided on by management. It is also receiving new ones, with applications open until October 12th.

RTE told staff that the digital era is fundamentally changing the shape and form of broadcasting organisations. It said that the recession demanded that the organisation makes significant efficiency improvements in all key operational areas.

After announcing it was seeking 200 redundancies in May, RTE received 264 expressions of interest.

RTE has already made some significant cost saving announcements.

Last week, it said it would locate the studio facilities of its regional offices in Galway, Athlone, Dundalk, Waterford and Sligo into local institutes of technology.

80 staff also left the station last week, including chief news correspondent Charlie Bird.
