Six arrested over Corkman's murder

Five men and one woman have been arrested in connection with dissident republican activities and murder in Cork.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED five men and one woman in connection with the activities of dissident republicans and the murder of a man in Cork last year.

Convicted drug dealer Gerard Stanton was killed in front of his wife and two children outside his home at Westlawn, Wilton in Cork city 20 January 2010.

The Garda operation, in which detectives raided a number of properties at about 6am this morning, had been planned for several weeks. The arrested men and woman are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. The woman is in her 20s, as is one of the men. Two of the arrested men are in their 30s, one is in his 40s, and the last is in his 50s.

Stanton was pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital last year after being shot with a sawn-off shotgun. His two children, who witnessed the attack, were both under five.
