HAVE A GOOD idea for a name for the Phoenix Park train station?
Then Irish Rail wants to hear from you.
The company is still looking for suggestions to help with the renaming of the station, and says it will be finalising its new moniker in the coming days.
“We’ve gotten a good response,” said spokesperson Jane Cregan. “Most of them are related to where it is, such as Navan Road.”
The company stated that it would not be naming the station after a person or event in the area.
It was initially built to facilitate the mooted residential development on the site of the old Phoenix Park Racecourse that was supposed to be built across from it.
However, due to the recession this development was not built and Irish Rail felt the name would mislead tourists in particular to think they were able to get the train to Phoenix Park, which is some distance away by foot.
Phoenix Park Station opened in January 2008 on the Maynooth-Dublin commuter line, between Castleknock and Ashtown Stations.
It is served by 40 trains in each direction to and from the city and there is a 100-space park and ride facility at the station.
