But Historian Dr Conor McCabe has found a way in which we can please Europe and still keep our low 12.5 per cent rate.

2. #AUSTRALIA The Irish woman was was last year convicted of raping another woman in Australia in 2009 has had all charges against her dropped today. Anne-Marie O’Loughlin had won a retrial after appealing her original conviction. But now the victim in the case has reportedly asked that the charges be dropped meaning the nurse from Co Offaly can return home.

3. #GAZA Politicians and actors, including TD Richard Boyd-Barrett and his mammy Sinead Cusack, will be on board the Irish aid ship that will be part of the flotilla bound for Gaza later this month. The flotilla will not include the Mavi Marmara, the ship which was the scene of the clashes between Turkish activists and Israeli forces in 2010. The Irish Anti-War Movement, which is organising the aid ship, is calling on the Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore to ask the Israeli government to ensure safe passage of the MV Saoirse to Gaza.

4. #SYRIA President Bashar Assad has issued a defiant address in which he blamed the unrest in Syria on “saboteurs” who are trying to exploit legitimate demands for reform in his country. More than 1,400 Syrians have been killed and thousands more detained by government forces since unrest began in mid-March. Here’s a timeline of what’s happened so far in the strategically key Middle East state.

5. #KEANO Roy Keane has put his house on the market having departed from his role as manager of Ipswich Town in January. The former Republic of Ireland captain is selling-up in Suffolk and his seven-bedroom house is yours for a cool €3.9 million. Check out some photos of the interior and exterior which includes a tennis court. Yes that’s right, a tennis court.
