THE TALK TALK CALL centre in Waterford is set to close its doors today, with the loss of 575 jobs.
The company announced the closure in early September, saying that the jobs were being outsourced to alternative sites. It cited growing online contact with customers as one of the reasons behind a drop in demand for call centre services.
Minister for Jobs and Enterprise Richard Bruton had requested the company extend the notice period, but this was refused.
Management told staff they had done “a fantastic job” and that the closure was “not about your performance”, but was down to complexities within the business.
Workers have spoken of their anger over having travelled to the UK to train staff who will now be taking over their jobs. At the time, they were not aware the jobs would be moved.
At its peak, the company employed over 700 staff in Waterford.
The Department of Education and Skills said it would provide training for any Talk Talk staff recruited by members of the Contact Centre Management Association, which recently held a jobs fair specifically for the Talk Talk staff, saying 150 vacancies were open to them within the call centre industry.
