Fuel cuts

1. The new measures taken by the Government to reduce the cost of fuel are taking effect today, although the fuel industry’s representative group has said customers will not see those cuts reflected at the pump immediately.

2. President Donald Trump has said that US-Iran peace talks could resume this week, while Israel and Lebanon agreed to launch direct negotiations, signalling movement on two key fronts in efforts to ease the Middle East conflict.

3. Gaza’s Civil Defence agency said a toddler was among 10 people killed in separate Israeli strikes in the northern part of the Palestinian territory yesterday.

4. Limerick woman Scarlett Faulkner, who died after suffering catastrophic head injuries in an alleged assault last month, is to be laid to rest on Friday, her family said.

Fuel protest fallout

5. Communications Minister Patrick O’Donovan is understood not to be pursuing a formal review of coverage of last week’s fuel protests following discussions with Coimisiún na Meán, despite his own suggestions that he would.

Homelessness

6. The median age of those who died homeless in 2022 was less than 50 for males, and for females it was just over 40. A total of 124 people died in homelessness in 2022, the Health Research Board said.

8. A new biopic partly funded by the Jackson estate and starring Michael Jackson’s nephew is due to be released across major Irish cinemas chains later this month, but it has been criticised for not including allegations of child abuse made against the star.

Harvey Weinstein

9. The retrial of convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein on a rape charge on which a jury was previously deadlocked started today, although he will remain imprisoned for other offenses regardless of the verdict.
