Getting back to the banana question, I would be 50 50, if the banana is kinda brown and the stalk has started to shrivel a bit, its better to open at the top. When the skin is still quite firm and a little bit green, it’s easier to open from the bottom.

I used to tear from the stalk as most people do. Then I saw a documentary which showed monkeys opening them from the bottom. Tried it myself and now I’ll never go back. It opens easier and the stalk works as a little handle. Try and see people. The monkeys got this one right.

BANANA MISCONCEPTION:

Bananas actually grow from the stalk upwards, so by peeling from the stalk you are actually peeling from the bottom up.

One opens it from the bottom part (with no stalk). Then break off lumps and eat.

When opening from the bottom, one can leave that tiny spike of pith sticking out from your first bite. Okay for monkeys, but I just don’t like to eat that or have to deal with it. I could see it sticking out from the top of that guy’s banana in the video. Opening from the stalk means you can avoid that spike of pith and are guaranteed a clean start and finish to your banana, as that spike of pith is satisfyingly revealed intact as you loosen the final bite. Mmmm. The bottom open is too messy in my humble opinion. All you need is a small thumbnail to gently indent the base of the stem above the banana’s flesh for a clean begining to your peel.
