- A shooting in a Dutch shopping mall has left six people dead and injured 11 according to officials in the Netherlands. Details are still patchy but the gunman is said to have shot himself after the rampage.
- In Northern Ireland, police say that the bomb that they found in a van on the Belfast to Dublin road could have been destined for a town centre and could have caused huge devastation and loss of life.
- The former independent TD Jackie Healy-Rae has revealed to TheJournal.ie that he has never bought a copy of the country’s best-selling daily newspaper, choosing the Irish Examiner instead. He’s also “not interested” in allegations made by the Irish Independent that he made secret deals with two former Taoisigh in return for supporting the last government.
- Good news on the job front, Tesco is creating 172 jobs in Balbriggan in Dublin and Celbridge in Kildare.
- The French finance minister Christine Lagarde and her Irish counterpart Michael Noonan got on just swell at a meeting yesterday as Ireland seeks a reduction on the interest it pays on its bailout package. But Portugal and its financial problems dominated the two-day summit of EU leaders which has now ended.
- The people of Iceland have voted today in a referendum on whether or not to pay back money lent to the country by Britain and the Netherlands to prop up a banking institution. Now that’s an idea…
- They’ve also been voting in Nigeria today. The oil-rich African country has a busy month ahead with voting for presidential and gubernatorial elections to follow today’s assembly vote.
- Gardaà have seized a significant amount of cannabis plants in Mayo as part of an ongoing operation. The plants were estimated to have a street value of €400,000
- Protests have again erupted in Egypt as citizens demand more democratic progress and resignations following the recent departure of president Hosni Mubarak. One person has been confirmed dead so far.
