Houses evacuated after two viable bombs are found

The Army bomb disposal team attended the scene.

A NUMBER OF houses in Cavan town were evacuated last night after two suspect devices were found.

The Defence Forces deployed the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team following a request from gardaí.

The team arrived at the scene at 7.30pm and made both devices safe.

A cordon was established and surrounding houses were evacuated.

After being made safe, the devices were then removed to a secure military location for further examination and subsequently declared as viable improvised explosive devices.

The scene was declared safe at 8.30pm.

The Defence Forces said that material has been handed over to the gardaí to assist them with their investigation.

So far this year there have been 127 EOD call-outs, compared to 141 (including 53 viable devices) in 2014.
