IT WAS NOT the long night that some anticipated but the US television networks kept their powder dry until around 4am Irish time when they finally called the swing state of Ohio and the election for Barack Obama.

The debacle of the mis-calling of Florida in 2000 has meant that networks have utterly changed how they make projections on election night so that they are more accurate and ultimately correct.
