6 picnic side dishes that are better than coleslaw

Be a picnic hero with these unusual dishes.

PICNICS ARE A great way to gather your friends and family and have a lovely catch-up with delicious food.

And the best way to feed everyone is doing it ‘pot-luck’ style, where everyone brings a dish or two to feed the masses.

Just to make sure the next picnic you attend isn’t inundated with coleslaw, we rounded up some of the best side dishes we could find, from the simple to the fancy, so you (and your contribution) can be the star of the show.

1. Miso pasta salad

Pasta salads are often Mediterranean in flavour but we found this Asian-inspired version that uses a salty seaweedy miso paste as its ‘inspiration’ ingredient. It’s easy to make and can be made in the night before to let the ingredients rest in the dressing and intensify the flavours.

2. Fresh tomato salsa

Tomato salsa with its spicy citrus-y undertones makes for a great fresh addition to any picnic and is really quick and easy to make.

Here’s the recipe.

3. Gorgeous guacamole

Guacamole has got to be one of the better foods invented – and you really need to make it from scratch to appreciate its deliciousness. Luckily it’s not hard to do at all, just an avocado, a little mashing and a couple of extra ingredients. Here’s a recipe that will put that store-bought stuff to shame.

4. Jalapeno lime hummus

Hummus is amazing at the best of times, to be fair, but throw some spice and citrus in there and you’ve taken it instantly (and with very little difficulty) to a whole new level.

You can add a little jalapeno or a lot – it’s up to you. Here’s the recipe. Bring some carrot sticks to, to be a true picnic hero.

5. Red, white and blue potato salad

The potatoes are red, the cheese is blue and the dressing is white. It’s not covered in mayonnaise so it’s a healthy version, too. Win win.

6. Strawberry mango salad

This fruity savoury salad will be a refreshing and colourful addition to any picnic. It’s an interesting mix of mango, cucumber and strawberry with a simple lime dressing. Easy to make in advance and easy to eat – just scoop up with a tortilla chip.
