IT’S BEEN A debate starter during this week’s campaigning for the general election.
On Thursday, Labour said if it was returned to power, it will hold a referendum on the controversial amendment, which enshrines the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn in the Constitution. Sinn Féin has also said it wants a process see the Eighth repealed.
Fine Gael has been less clear on its intentions, proposing a citizens’ assembly within six months of re-election before deciding if any referendum takes place.
Meanwhile, there is no mention of the Eighth Amendment or abortion in Fianna Fáil’s manifesto.
