Angela Scanlon follows Ryan Tubridy off the air at Virgin Radio UK

It’s not clear which party terminated the eight-month-old contract, but it comes amid a schedule overhaul.

IRISH BROADCASTER ANGELA Scanlon is following her compatriots Ryan Tubridy and Graham Norton off the air at Virgin Radio UK, as the station overhauls its schedule.

It’s not clear whether Virgin or Scanlon terminated the contract, but it comes as the station makes a raft of changes for the new year.

In particular, the News UK-owned station has brought in a slightly older and more rock-focused roster of presenters this week, in a possible bid for the Gen X market.

It’s less than a year since Scanlon joined Virgin as a replacement presenter for Graham Norton, who stepped down last February. Norton said at the time that he wanted his weekends back.

In April, Scanlon became a permanent fixture on the Virgin schedule with her own three-hour weekend breakfast show on Saturdays and Sundays. She’s being replaced by long-standing Virgin host Tim Cocker.

Some in the radio industry have speculated that the high profiles of some recent departures from Virgin suggest a cost-cutting exercise is likely to be underway.

British radio industry consultant Matt Deegan told The Journal Virgin is doing “solidly” but its listenership has fallen from 1.5 million a year ago to 1.3 million now.

“They’re probably looking at that and thinking, ‘what do we need to do to get the numbers back up?’ The UK is a super competitive market. There’s a lot of competition for Virgin and [radio conglomerates] Global and Bauer and much, much bigger,” Deegan said.

The new roster of presenters on Virgin is “maybe a little bit older than before” and “a bit more rocky”, Deegan said.

Strictly Come Dancing?

Meanwhile, Angela Scanlon has been touted as a possible future presenter of the BBC’s ratings hit Strictly Come Dancing, after Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly signed off at the end of last year’s series. Scanlon was previously a contestant on the show.

On his ‘The Rest is Entertainment’ podcast recently, TV producer and presenter Richard Osman said: “It would be quite fun to have two hosts who have been on Strictly.”

“The two people who I think could do these two jobs are Angela Scanlon, who I absolutely adore and who could do that Tess [Daly] job all day long – she’s so smart, she’s been on the show, loves the show, viewers absolutely adore her – and, up in the gods, [actor and comedian] Chris Ramsay.”

Scanlon has been contacted for comment via her agent. News UK has been contacted for comment.

Ryan Tubridy announced last month that he will leave his weekday mid-morning slot on Virgin, which was simulcast on a number of radio stations in Ireland, to launch a YouTube programme. The Late Show will also be broadcast on the Times Radio digital station.
