'We were going for a Georgian look': Samantha shares her spacious self-build hallway

“The panelling and the stairs were central to the design of this space.”

EACH WEEK, WE ask someone based in Ireland with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

Samantha has lived in a self-build in the south of Ireland since February 2017, after starting work on the property in April 2016.

“Neither my husband nor I had experience of building or any trade linked to a house build, but we always wanted to design and build our own home,” says Samantha.

This week, Samantha (@anirishcountryselfbuild) chatted us through her favourite spot: her hallway.

What do you love about this part of your home?

I love the space it gives us, the character and the style. I’ve always liked panelling and I’m so glad that we did it.

What’s your favourite object in here and why?

I love our stairs. When we were building the house we gave special attention to the size of the hall so we could fit a stairs like this. It has an extra wide step to accommodate the carpet runner and has a slight curve towards the end giving it a bit of Georgian character.

What was your inspiration when you were putting this room together?

We wanted to try to achieve a Georgian look. The panelling and the stairs were central to the design of this space and then everything else just fell in around that. We also wanted to be able to see from the back of the house to the front, so that is why we have double glass doors leading into the kitchen.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

Not too much, the hall is the easiest place to keep tidy. Apart from a pram and some shoes, the hall is kept clear. We have a back hall behind the kitchen that takes the majority of the footfall.

Is there anything in here you’d like to change?

I love it as it is, but if I was to be pushed on this question, I would add some built-in storage for shoes and coats.
