Conor O'Carroll wins Young Journalist of the Year for impressive triad of investigations

They are among several Journal Media staffers that were recognised in this year’s nominations.

CONOR O’CARROLL HAS won Young Journalist of the Year at the 2025 Irish Journalism Awards.

They are among several Journal Media staffers that were recognised in this year’s nominations.

O’Carroll is a reporter with The Journal Investigates (TJI), and was awarded for three of their stories.

These were investigations on the use of fossil fuels by data centres, the role of Irish companies in US deportations, and planning objections to vet practices.

Susan Daly, Managing Editor of Journal Media, said: “Conor is one of our most exciting young journalists and we are delighted to have their work celebrated at national level today.

“Investigative journalism is a demanding and skilled profession and Conor is already making waves and effecting change with their exclusive and in-depth reporting into a range of topics.

Maria Delaney, TJI Editor, was nominated in the investigations category for her series of articles on delays to cancer screening and treatment.

Saoirse McGarrigle’s exclusive interview with Michael Shine was nominated for Scoop of the Year.

David MacRedmond was nominated for Features Journalist of the Year for his work on debunking disinformation.

In the Podcast of the Year category, The42FM was nominated. It’s presented by Sinead O’Carroll and Gavin Cooney.

Conney was also nominated for Sports Writer of the Year (broadsheet) for his diverse coverage, which included the Paris Olympic Games and colour from Rory McIlroy’s Portrush win.

Freelancer Ken Foxe won News Reporter of the Year.

Sally Hayden of the Irish Times won Features Journalist of the Year (broadsheet), as well as the award for Foreign Coverage.

Jenny Friel won in the popular Features category.

The Times’s John Mooney was named Political Journalist of the Year. He also won an award for his investigative journalism.

Podcast of the Year went to John Lee’s series on the history of Sinn Féin.
