A 19-YEAR-OLD man who was arrested in connection with an assault that left a man in critical condition has been released from custody this afternoon.

The attack took place at Woodview in Killygowan in Monaghan last night. Gardaí were called to the scene of a disturbance just before midnight and discovered the unconscious man in the roadway.

The victim, who is in his late 20s, had suffered head injuries and was taken to Cavan General Hospital

He has since been moved to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is understood to be critical. Northern Sound reports the man is a non-national.

Yesterday gardaí said a 19-year-old man was arrested by officers investigating the serious assault. He was detained at Monaghan Garda Station for questioning.

A technical and forensic examination of the scene was also carried out.

Local Sinn Féin councillor Seán Conlon told TheJournal.ie that this kind of assault is “out of character” for the area.
