TO CELEBRATE AND commemorate some truly stellar performances over the years, we’ve rounded up an unofficial list of what we consider to be some of the best acts at Irish gigs and festivals.
Without further ado… drumroll please…
For their 20 (twenty!) year anniversary, The Frames played Vicar Street and it went down a storm. From hilarious Glen banter to him donning an audience member’s mask (don’t ask) to sing Lay Me Down by all accounts this is one where ‘you had to be there’.
The Killers – where did they disappear to? In 2009 however they were one of the biggest bands in the world. If you were lucky enough to see them headline at Oxegen, you would know why, too.
REM chose Dublin in 2007 to run a series of practice gigs and sold-out shows at the intimate (for them) Olympia Theatre. We’ve been reliably informed by a DailyEdge.ie staffer that ’it was amazing’. You can judge for yourself below…
Brian Wilson didn’t perform for decades, and some of us thought we would never get to see the great man live. How wrong we were! Luckily, he made headway with his stage-fright and anyone at his gig in The Point, 2002 was in for a treat.
Divisive as Bono may be, you can’t deny U2 put on a great show, and Slane 2001 was no exception. Supported by Coldplay and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers it was a stomping gig that is still quoted as one of the best gigs of all time (if you had the good fortune to be there).
