Bins set on fire outside Ipas centre in Dublin 8 during disturbance last night

A number of gardaí attended the scene yesterday evening.

A SMALL GROUP of people attacked an International Protection (IPAS) accommodation centre in Dublin’s south inner city last night, setting fire to bins outside the building.

Gardaí said they responded to a public order incident in the Basin Lane area of Dublin 8 shortly after 7pm, where a number of wheelie bins were damaged by fire.

In footage seen by The Journal, missiles and fireworks were thrown at the property, and a barricade made of bins and rubbish was erected nearby.

Video footage circulating online shows a group shouting “get them out” while bins burned outside the centre’s entrance.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

A heavy Garda presence remained in the area throughout the evening.

Footage of last night’s Basin Lane attack has been widely circulated on social media, where calls for similar gatherings had been shared earlier in the day.

Gardaí later moved the group away from the site and down towards James’s Street.

The site on Basin Lane is relatively small, containing 10 rooms to house 20 men.

Anti-immigration protests were held at the site earlier this year over the proposed conversion of a nearby warehouse to Ipas accommodation.

The incident occurred on the same night that protests at another Ipas centre in Citywest concluded peacefully, following two nights of violent unrest earlier in the week.

In a statement, gardaí confirmed they are investigating the incident
